Sexual Health FAQs

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are those infections that are transmissible through sexual contacts with another person who is infected with the STI.

As our body does not have immunity to any STI, a patient may get infected with the same STI again even if he has already recovered from the STI.

  • Why do we need to get tested for STIs / HIV?

Most STIs and HIV are asymptomatic and have window period. One may inadvertently transmit STIs and/or HIV to his / her partner. It may affect the relationship. If no prompt treatment is administered after STIs / HIV infection, it could lead to different types of complications and cause permanent damage to the body (such as damage to the prostate and testicles, heart, eyes and central nervous system, etc). Therefore, persons who are suspected of having infected are advised to receive rapid test as soon as possible and to seek professional treatment. It is important not to hide away for fear of diagnosis and treatment, such that the risk of transmission of STIs / HIV can be lowered.

  • Does masturbation (handjob) carry any risk of STI / HIV infection?

Masturbation is a low-risk sexual behavior. However, STIs such as genital warts and herpes can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.

3. I only had oral sex (blowjob). Is there any risk of STI / HIV infection?
STIs / HIV can be transmitted through oral sex. Gonorrhoea and syphilis are common STIs transmitted through oral sex. Therefore, proper use of condom in oral sex is effective in reducing the risk of getting infected with these STIs.

4. Does general social contact pose any risk of HIV infection?
HIV is mainly transmitted in the following ways: Sexual contacts (including anal and oral sex), blood contact, needle-sharing, syringe-sharing and mother-to-child transmission. Therefore, general social contacts (such as shaking hands, dining together, swimming in public swimming pool, taking public transport together) will not transmit HIV.

5. I do not have any symtoms. Does it mean I am not infected and do not need any STI tests?
The absence of symptoms dooes not mean that one is not infected. This is because many patients infected with STIs (e.g. HIV, Syphilis) show no symptoms. If there are sexual contacts, regular rapid test every 6 to 12 months , and the proper use of condom are advised to lower the risk of infection.

6. For a pair of couple, if both of them do not have HIV or STIs, does it mean that a condom is no longer required?
Some STIs are asymptomatic. Different STIs also have different latent periods. Even sexual contacts with a regular sex partner carry risk of infection.

7. I suspect I got STIs. Can I prescribe medication myself?
Do not self-prescribe STI medication. Inappropriate medication may cause permanent damage to the body and delay proper treatment. If symptoms developed, please consult your doctor and seek proper treatment immediately.

8. I have a lot of questions about STIs. I would like to seek help but I am so embarrassed. What can I do?

Nowadays, most STIs are curable and/or controllable. If you suspect having infected with STIs, please seek medical attention immediately. Doctors and medical staff are professionally trained to provide the most appropriate treatment for the patient. As all of your personal data and medical records are protected under the the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, it is not necessary to avoid medical consultation for fear, worry or embarrassment. If you have questions about STIs, please feel free to call us at 31889024
